不等毛藻（ふとうもうそう、Heterokonts）は元々は今日でいう黄緑藻綱を指す言葉としてアレクサンダー・ルーサー（英: Alexander Luther）により1899に導入されたものである[1]。

その後黄緑藻綱を含む系統群のオクロ植物 (Ochrophyta) やそれよりも更に広い系統群であるストラメノパイルが導入されると、不等毛藻の意味をある著者はオクロ植物と同義に用い[2][3]、ある著者はストラメノパイルと同義に用い[4]、さらに別の著者にはオクロ植物とBigyraと偽菌類をあわせたものを不等毛藻と呼ぶ[5]（しかもこれらをあわせたものは単系統にならない[6]）など用語の使い方が曖昧になった。


こうした曖昧性もあり、国際原生生物学会（ISOP）がまとめ、改定を繰り返している系統樹では2005年[7]、2012年[8]、2019年[6]のいずれのものでもHeterokonts、Heterokontophytaは用いられない。
